The Mysterious Mother-Daughter Bond

July 16, 2012 3 Comments

This week, I am participating in the “5 Days of… Summer Series” with the wonderful ladies at the iHomeschool Network.

My topic is “5 Days of Bonding with Your Daughter.” I will share tips and ideas for making your relationship with your daughter a close one, both now and throughout your lifetimes.

Have you ever felt like someone was watching you?

Last Sunday, the family was on the way to church with my husband driving. We were running late, so I put my makeup bag in the car and on the way, I was putting my makeup on when the creepy “someone is watching you” feeling came over me. I looked back in the mirror to see my daughter watching me with a look of utter concentration.

I wondered what she was thinking at that moment? What messages was she absorbing? What questions did she have? How was this moment going to affect her life?

Okay, so maybe I was reading way too much into one little moment. Maybe she looked at my antics with makeup as morning entertainment :-) . But then isn’t that just what happens with the mother-daughter relationship? Every moment seems to be fraught with intense emotional drama: love, affection, worry, high expectations, joy, perfectionism, laughter. There is never a boring moment when raising a daughter. It is wonderful, precious and intensely rewarding.

On the other hand, this relationship is also fragile. We forget what it was like to be a little girl. It’s hard to recollect the challenges of growing into womanhood now that we have come into our own as women.

As mothers, we need to be purposeful about raising our daughters. Don’t just go with the flow, don’t make assumptions about who she is and what she needs to know. She’s you and then not you all at the same time. And she needs you – A LOT. She desperately wants to know who you were and who you are now. She needs you to talk to her, listen to her, show her the ropes, play with her, comfort her, correct her, disciple her and learn alongside her.

So this is my goal in bringing you 5 Days of Bonding with Your Daughter. I will talk about bonding with her over her relationship with God, bonding over your life stories, bonding over homemaking and crafts, and bonding over friendships and relationships.
